TORONTO - Amis Holiday, a rallying runner-up to Lexie Lou in the Queens Plate, heads a list of 11 horses nominated to the $500,000 Prince of Wales Stakes, to be held on Tuesday, July 29 at Fort Erie Racetrack. The 79th edition of the Prince of Wales for Canadian-foaled three-year-olds will be televised live on TSN at 7pm et/4pm pt. At a distance of 1 3/16-miles, the Prince of Wales is the only race in the Canadian Triple Crown Series that is run on a traditional dirt surface. The Queens Plate, a 1 1/4-mile Poly test is the first jewel of the Triple Crown which is completed by the Breeders Stakes, a 1 1/2-mile endurance test over Woodbines E.P. Taylor Turf Course, to be held on Sunday, August 17. Queens Plate winner Lexie Lou was not among the nominees, but trainer Mark Casse, who won last years Prince of Wales with Uncaptured, has nominated Matador and East Side. Amis Holiday, an Ivan Dalos homebred son of Harlans Holiday-Victorious Ami, started from the outside post under Luis Contreras in a 15-horse strong Plate field with the filly, Lexie Lou, leaving from Post 14. The bay settled near the back of the pack in the 1 1/4-mile classic and tracked the run of Patrick Husbands and Lexie Lou through the final turn before a thrilling stretch run. While Lexie Lou had a clear path to the wire, Contreras had to maneuver Amis Holiday to the rail to avoid traffic trouble, closing with intent to finish 1 1/2-lengths behind the winning filly. "I was really happy with him. I thought he made a tremendous run," said trainer Josie Carroll. "The filly came from right inside of us. You cant take anything away from her, she ran a great race." Amis Holiday breezed four furlongs in :50.20 on Thursday morning over the Woodbine Poly. "He came out of the Plate very well," said Carroll. "Hes going to go down to Fort Erie on Monday to have a gallop over the track and see the paddock. His final breeze will be back here at Woodbine." Amis Holiday will be making his first dirt start in the Prince of Wales, but the colt spent part of his winter at Oaklawn Park with Carroll before shipping to Keeneland for his seasonal debut when fourth in the Grade 3 Lexington Stakes. "He was on the dirt all winter at Oaklawn and he was fine on the dirt," said Carroll. With a record of 2-2-1 from seven starts and purse earnings of $423,460, Amis Holiday has been a consistent performer for his owner-breeder topped by a win in Octobers Grade 3 Grey Stakes at Woodbine. Carroll is hopeful the colt will earn Dalos a coveted Classic win at Fort Erie. "When you look at the horses that Mr. Dalos has bred, with that back pedigree of Victory Gallop (sire of dam Victorious Ami), he definitely sets out to breed a horse for endurance," said Carroll. Lions Bay, trained by Jamie Attard for longtime owners/breeders Martin and Vicky Earle and their sons, Nicholas and Jonathan, arrives at the Prince of Wales from a troubled sixth-place run in the Queens Plate. The Sligo Bay colt entered the Plate with back-to-back wins, but trouble arrived almost immediately after the break for horse and rider David Moran. "He broke well, but two steps out he stumbled and grabbed the inside of his front right foot and bent his shoe down about an inch and a half," said Attard. "It made him uncomfortable and David said he wasnt able to stride out like he normally would." "The filly ran a huge race that day and I dont want to take anything away from her. I dont think we would have won, but we think we could have been fourth. There were only 2 1/2-lengths from fourth to six in the Plate and we felt we could have been right there." Good news coming out of the race is that Lions Bay appeared no worse for wear. "Thankfully we came back to the barn and he didnt have a nick on him," said Attard. "We pulled the shoe right away and his foot is fine. We put a new shoe on him and hes training beautifully, so it seems to be a non-issue." Lions Bay will breeze over Woodbines dirt training track on Tuesday afternoon in his final Prince of Wales prep. "He did most of his preliminary training last year on the training track and hes had a number of works over it and he handles it fine," said Attard. "I understand that Fort Erie is a little bit different of a dirt surface, but weve breezed here in :47 and change, so he handles the dirt very well." Matador and Coltimus Prime, seventh and ninth in the Plate respectively, are also expected to make the short trek down the Queen Elizabeth Way for the Prince of Wales. Matador, trained by Casse for John Oxley, arrived at the Plate from an easy allowance win after trying his luck in a series of U.S. Triple Crown prep races where his best result was a fourth-place finish in the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs. Casse won the 2013 edition of the Prince of Wales with Uncaptured, the 2012 Canadian Horse of the Year. Coltimus Prime, a dark bay Milwaukee Brew colt, was part of the early pace in the Plate before fading. The Justin Nixon trainee boasts a record of 2-2-0 from eight career starts including an allowance score heading into the Plate. Owned by Cabernet Racing Stables, the social media savvy connections also attempted to make the Kentucky Derby with ColtimusPrime, finishing a good fifth in the Grade 1 Blue Grass at Keeneland before deciding to focus on the Plate. Newcomers to the Canadian Triple Crown experience on the nomination list include Ascot Martin, Bangkok, East Side, Lynx, Money Talks, Rhythm Blues and Smart Spree. Of that group, Money Talks, a dark bay Mobil gelding trained by William Tharrenos, seems certain to make the Prince of Wales field. Money Talks, under a patient steer from Jesse Campbell, toppled an optional claiming field in style on Friday afternoon at Woodbine covering 1 1/16-miles in 1:45.28. Making his first start since May 19, Campbell settled into fifth position along the rail with Money Talks and waited until the top of the lane to split rivals with an impressive turn of foot for a 4 3/4-length score. "Jesse just let him run the last eighth of a mile. He looks pretty fit right now," said Tharrenos following the race. "That little break really helped him. He had a two month break and in a couple works it showed in the morning that hes coming along very well. "I think well point there (the Prince of Wales) as long as he comes out of it well. We were really pleased to have that little break and let him come back to himself. He wasnt right the last couple starts, but we have him right now." Money Talks boasts a record of 3-2-1 from 10 career starts and has faced older company in all four of his 2014 starts. Tharrenos is confident the gelding will handle the dirt. "He trains well on it in the morning and I think this (result) will get him to peak right on," said Tharrenos. The draw for the Prince of Wales will take place on Friday, July 25th in the Fort Erie Race Office at 1pm. The Prince of Wales will be run on Tuesday, July 29th. First race post time is scheduled for 4:15. The Prince of Wales will be televised on TSN from 7pm to 8pm EDT with the Prince of Wales scheduled for 7:40 pm. Jeff Hornacek Jersey .Y. -- The New York Islanders were seeking a positive finish to a frustrating season on home ice.Lewis Hamilton described Sunday as the best day of his life, and why not? After a season-long battle of wits and skills he was one hard contact or reliability issue away from absolute glory or miserable failure. He now becomes only the fourth British driver, out of 143 whove tried, to win multiple World Championships, joining an elite list along with Jim Clark, Graham Hill and Sir Jackie Stewart. At 33 wins he is now fifth on the all-time list, with an impressive 11 in this season alone. Media talk now speculates about sports personality of the year in the UK and even suggests Sir Lewis Hamilton by New Year. No wonder he was patting and willing his car to the finish line whilst maintaining just enough pace to cover off the highly-impressive Felipe Massa in the Williams, who kept the mighty Mercs in view pretty much all race. The Sky Sports F1 team joined Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes garage to discuss his World Championship victory. Hamilton deserved the World Championship, of that there can surely be no debate. His racecraft and speed, delivered virtually error-free all season, was mighty and he never gave up when he was repeatedly many points behind his team-mate. Instead, he simply dug in and believed in his skills and personal approach and qualities. Yes of course he had a dominant car, but Nico Rosberg summed it up perfectly when he magnanimously declared that the best man won. VOTE: 25 moments for 25 years Pick your favourite moment from 25 years of Sky Sports I went to find Rosberg after the race so that I could personally tell him just how much I respected that he drove his car to the finish line despite so many technical problems. His team even offered by radio the chance to end the agony of falling back through the field and being lapped, but he soldiered on rather than parking and whinging. He once again proved to be the master of qualifying, but after the race he openly recognised that he needs to find another personal gear on race day if hes going to beat Lewis next year. That process starts immediately in the post-race test in Abu Dhabi.Weve learned this year that heres a much more steely edge to Rosberg than his fresh-faced blonde locks suggest. He can be quite cunning, and clearly massively fast and consistent but can he ever match Hamiltons sheer naturally gifted race pace and killer instinct? Will he ever be as hungry and determined? Well find out in 2015, and hell need to raise his game because Lewis will be on fire now and full of confidence. Ted asks what makes the Mercedes W05 one of F1s most dominant cars.dddddddddddd A word for Team Brackley in conjunction with Brixworth and Stuttgart. The Mercedes was probably the most dominant car of the past few decades. It wasnt the most reliable but the engine and chassis were a marriage of exquisite technical detail and beauty. We only fleetingly saw just how good that car really could be if needed, such as after the Safety Cars in Bahrain and Singapore, and Rosberg effectively non-stopping in Russia as he drove back through the field. They won a record-breaking 16 races. Two more outstanding stars of 2014 were Daniel Ricciardo and Valtteri Bottas, both of them showing that they could have challenged for the world title in a Mercedes. Ricciardo continued until the final lap to make Vettel looked ordinary this season and its no wonder Sebastian felt the time was right to high tail it to Ferrari. Red Bull have a mighty duo in Ricciardo and Kvyat for next season.Despite a lacklustre year and no Mercedes engine, Red Bull still had the momentum and quality to finish second in the World Championship. Williams had the better all-round package and if Massa wasnt involved in so many scuffles in the first half of the season they may have even finished higher than third in the constructors. But Felipe very much played his part in the welcome revival of the great Williams team along with many others who helped steer them back on course. And Bottas is a class act with a very bright future. Britain’s most raced F1 driver Jenson Button chatted to Simon Lazenby as speculation about his future went into overdrive ahead of the 2014 finale Jenson Button finished the season on especially good form as McLaren improved their car relatively speaking too. He completed more race laps than any other driver, and his wheel-to-wheel action with, and subsequent beating of, Fernando Alonso in Abu Dhabi was skilful, classy, and personal. After 15 years JB has had a very good innings with victories and a World Championship. Hes successful, healthy, wealthy and with no doubt the world at his feet in areas outside of F1. But if hes not on the grid next year, then as I said in commentary, half of the drivers who are there wouldnt hold a candle to his speed and skill.I wont go the sympathy route though because I dont believe in it and F1 is a brutal business. Jenson got into F1 because somebody else lost their ride, thats how it works. But he still has plenty to offer, although the quality of the new kids is very high as Ive already mentioned.MB ' ' '

PRETORIA, South Africa -- Oscar Pistorius had a heightened concern for his personal safety and was making plans to take girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on international trips shortly before he fatally shot her, his agent testified at the double-amputee runners murder trial Tuesday. The defence called Peet van Zyl to the stand in an attempt to bolster Pistorius account that he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder, providing testimony about a loving relationship and a fear of crime that may have pushed the Paralympian to fire through a closed toilet door. Van Zyl faced tough questioning from the chief prosecutor, however, about Pistorius alleged egotism and tantrums, high-speed driving and love of guns. The prosecution maintains that he intentionally killed Steenkamp in his home after an argument in the early hours of Feb. 14, 2013. Pistorius, who is free on bail, faces 25 years to life in prison if found guilty of premeditated murder, but he could also be sentenced to significant time behind bars if convicted of murder without premeditation or negligent killing. He also faces gun-related charges. The agent, who helped guide Pistorius to success as a globally renowned athlete with lucrative sponsorship deals that have since been stripped away, testified that his client had a "heightened sense of awareness" and appeared preoccupied with security at times. On one occasion, he recalled, Pistorius drove with him at high speed to the airport and, when told there was no rush, recalled a traumatic episode in which Van Zyl was accosted at gunpoint while in his car in 2007. "He wantted to ensure that we are safe and not being followed," Van Zyl said.dddddddddddd He also remembered a time when Pistorius grabbed him by the arm in apparent fear when the pair heard a loud bang while walking in New York City, and described two occasions in which the runner lost his temper but was not aggressive under "abusive questioning" from journalists. He also said he was assisting Pistorius in plans to take Steenkamp, a 29-year-old model, to races in Britain and Brazil, and a concert in Italy. Prosecutor Gerrie Nel tried to pick holes in Van Zyls testimony, pressing the agent for details about a reported incident in which a South African athlete who was sharing a room with Pistorius asked for them to be separated because Pistorius was allegedly arguing frequently on his telephone. He also referred to a 2012 Paralympics race in which Pistorius accused the winner of breaking the rules by using prosthetic limbs that were too long. Van Zul acknowledged that it was the "wrong place and wrong time for him to react in such a way" but noted there was a "long lead-up" to the incident in which Pistorius had expressed concerns that rules were being flouted. Nel also described Pistorius plans to take Steenkamp on trips as an example of alleged narcissism after Van Zyl quoted the athlete as saying he wanted his girlfriend "to see what my world is about, the pressure that Im under" and "how I need to perform." During an adjournment, Van Zyl and Pistorius shook hands. The two men patted each other warmly on the back. ' ' '

MIAMI - Nathan Eovaldi pitched seven innings and the Miami Marlins scored nine runs off NL ERA leader Aaron Harang to beat the Atlanta Braves 9-3 Wednesday. Harang (3-2) gave up 10 hits in 4 2-3 innings, and his ERA rose from 0.85 to 2.97. The Marlins tied a season high with 15 hits, including seven for extra bases. Marcell Ozuna hit a three-run homer, and Christian Yelich added his first home run of the year. The homers were the first allowed by Harang this year. Miamis 9-0 lead after five innings was a rare luxury for Eovaldi (2-1), who has the lowest career run support among active major-league starters. The right-hander allowed three hits and one run to lower his ERA to 2.58. Casey McGehee had three hits and Adeiny Hechavarria legged out a double and a triple for the last-place Marlins, who have outscored the NL East leaders 18-3 in the first two games of their series. The Marlins will sweep a series from Atlanta for the first time since 2009 if they can beat Ervin Santana on Thursday. The Marlins are batting .307 in their spacious ballpark, where theyre 11-4 to lead the majors in home victories. Theyre batting .215 on the road, where theyre 2-10. The Braves totalled six hits, including Justin Uptons eighth homer. Harang had allowed a total of three runs in his first five starts, but the Marlins scored four against him with four consecutive hits to start the second inning. Garrett Jones singled home the first run, and Ozuna followed with his fourth homer. Hechavarria tripled and Yelich hit a two-run homer in the fourth to make it 7-0. The nine runs allowed by Harang matched his career high. He fell to 5-5 in 15 starts against the Marlins with an ERA of 6.54. Eovaldi allowed a double by Jason Heyward to start the game, then held the Braves hitless until the sixth. CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Steve Smith era in Carolina is over. The Panthers released their all-time leading receiver on Thursday after 13 seasons. Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman said it "was not an easy decision" in a press release. "Steve has been one of the NFLs finest receivers for over a decade and has been the face of the franchise for a large part of the teams history," Gettleman said. "As a team, we made a step forward last year; however we are also a team in transition, which is a part of the NFL." Smith said on radio Thursday hes not angry about the decision. "Its devastating to hear that you are getting fired, but its also exciting because that frees me up to be pursued by other teams," Smith told Taylor Zarzour of SiriusXMs Bleacher Report Radio." I have never become a free agent before so I will get a few free dinners out of it at some nice expensive restaurants. I want to enjoy the experience that, frankly, I will never experience again." Smith reiterated he wants to play in the NFL and that being released "awoke a sleeping giant" inside of him. The decision comes one day after Smiths agent, Derrick Fox, told The Associated Press that the 13-year NFL veteran "is not going to play for the Panthers next year, I know that." Fox said the Panthers never asked Smith, who turns 35 in May, to restructure his current contract. The Panthers were unable to trade Smith, who was set to cost $7 million under this years salary cap. The Panthers still owe Smith $3 million this season. The decision has not been a popular one among Carolina fans. Gettleman addressed that in his press release. "When I took this position I knew that difficult decisions would have to be made along the way," Gettleman said. "To move on from a storied veteran player is probably the most difficult of all. A decision not to be taken lightly. However, after much thought I feel very strongly its the right one." "As Ive stated many times, all decisions I make will be in the long-term best interest of the Carolina Panthers. Decisions, either popular or unpopular, have to be made for the greater good and it is imperative to take an unemotional global view. Sometimes it may appear that short term interests will suffer, and I can assure you we have no interest in taking a step back from our 2013 accomplishments." The Panthers also lost wide receivers Domenik Hixon and Ted Ginn Jr. to free agency on Thursday. Hixon signed with the Chicago Bears and Ginn with the Arizona Cardinals. Panthers cornerback Captain Munnerlyn told The Associated Press he has signed with the Minnesota Vikings for a deal that could pay him $15 million over three years with incentives. One possible replacement at wide receiver is free agent Hakeem Nicks, a Charlotte native who played for New York Giants. The Smith move marks the end of an era for the Panthers. Smith joined the team as a third-round draft pick out of Utah in 2001. He made an immediate impact in the NFL, returning the opening kickoff of the season for a touchdown against the Vikings. He became the first Panthers rookie selected to the Pro Bowl, earning that honour as a return specialist. Known for his feisty behaviour on the field, Smith became a dominant receiver over the next 12 seasons. He is Carolinas all-time leader with 75 total touchdowns and has 836 receptions for 12,197 yards. "On the football field Steve had a competitive arrogance that (was) second to none -- second to none," said former Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme in a telephone interview. "That helped him be as good as he was. He made other guys step up their game. But off the field he was totally different. He loves his wife and his family. Hes a genuinely good person with a great heart." Panthers coach Ron Rivera said in the release: "He is a great competitor with Hall of Fame-worthy statistics and has made a great contribution to our community." Fox said Smith would have welcomed a chance to move inside to slot receiver, but the team never offered him that opportunity. As productive as Smith was, his fiery personality often rubbed people the wrong way, and some viewed him as a distraction in the locker room. Smith had run-ins with teammates on at least two occasions. He punched out fellow wide receiver Anthony Bright in a film room fight and later socked cornerback Ken Lucas on the field during a practice at training camp in Spartanburg, S.C. On both occasions, Smith was suspended by the team. Delhomme said that was a "humbling experience" for Smith, who apologized to Lucas and the teams fans after the incident. Despite the two incidents, Smith was immensely popular with the fan base, in large part due to his production on the field. He also worked hard to change his public image over the last several years and has been an active member of the Charlotte community. When asked if he was surprised Smith was released, Delhomme said, "It does surprise, but thats the NFL. I mean, look, Peyton Manning plays for the Denver Broncos -- that the way it goes." Cleveland signed Bengals slot receiver Andrew Hawkins to a contract offer sheet on Thursday, a Browns spokesman said. Cincinnati will have five days — until next Tuesday — to match the reported four-year, $13.6 million deal, which includes a $3.8 million signing bonus, or theyll lose the speedy and elusive Hawkins. The Browns are in the market to fill the slot position after releasing troubled wide receiver Davone Bess last week. The Bengals have not said what they intend to do with Hawkins, who caught just 12 passes last season and missed four games with a high ankle sprain. In 2012, Hawkins had 51 catches for 533 yards and four touchdowns. The 28-year-old Hawkins was in Clevelands rookie minicamp in 2007, but wasnt signed. He played in the Canadian Football League before signing with the Bengals. If he joins the Browns, the 5-foot-7 Hawkins would provide a nice complement for Pro Bowl wide receiver Josh Gordon and another option for quarterback Brian Hoyer, who at this point is the favourite to begin next season as Clevelands starter. As they await Cincinnatis decision on Hawkins, the Browns are exploring other options and are believed to have interest in New Englands Julian Edelman, a free agent who caught 105 passes last season as Tom Bradys primary target. Edelman took over the role once held by Wes Welker and finished with 1,056 yards receiving and six touchdowns. The former Kent State quarterback also handled punt return duties for the Patriots. He has another local connection because he was a teammate on the Patriots with Hoyer, who backed up Brady for three seasons. On Thursday night, the Browns hosted Houston free agent running back Ben Tate, who could fill a major hole for Clevelandd.dddddddddddd Tate was supposed to meet with the team on Wednesday but his visit had to be postponed because of a severe winter storm. Tate rushed for 771 yards and four touchdowns last season, his third with the Texans. He has been on Clevelands radar for months, starting soon after the club traded Trent Richardson to Indianapolis for a first-round draft pick. Tate has averaged 4.7 yards per carry and hes rushed for 1,992 yards and 10 TDs. The Browns didnt adequately replace Richardson and their rushing game was almost nonexistent. Earlier in the day, the Browns signed tight end Jim Dray to a three-year, $5.62 million contract, with $2.25 million in the first season. The 6-foot-5, 255-pounder spent the past four seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, setting career highs with 26 catches for 215 yards and two touchdowns last season. Primarily a blocker, Dray gives the Browns depth at tight end behind Pro Bowl Jordan Cameron and Gary Barnidge. Dray was impressed that the Browns showed early interest in him. "Just hearing from my agent that the Browns were pretty aggressive from the start of free agency," said Dray, drafted out of Stanford in the seventh round in 2010. "I thought that theyd be a great fit for me, so the feeling was mutual and Im really excited to be here. Ive been watching (offensive co-ordinator) coach (Kyle) Shanahans offence for Washington the past couple years, and the way they used their tight ends seemed like a good fit." The Browns also are waiting for what happens with Pro Bowl centre Alex Mack. They placed their transition tag — worth $10.039 million for one year — on him last week and will have five days to match any offer if he signs with another team. Mack has until July 22 to sign his transition tag and its possible his situation could drag on. ' ' '

Following the announcement of the Team Canada roster for Sochi 2014 on Tuesday, speculation has begun about which of the three goaltending candidates should become the starter, Roberto Luongo, Carey Price, or Mike Smith. The two names that are being bounced around most are British Columbia native Price and Montreal native Luongo. Both have had very successful seasons to date, with each players goals-against average sitting around the 2.20 mark. They have similar save percentages as well, with Price besting Luongo by a small margin at .928. So if you were head coach Mike Babcock, who would be your starting goalie? Luongo is a veteran in international competition, having competed in both the 2006 Turin games and winning gold in his home country at the Vancouver 2010 games. He averaged 1.76 goals against in the 2010 games when he was the teams starting goaltender. The Vancouver Canuck is currently at a disadvantage due to injury. Hes had a slow start to 2014 after suffering a groin injury in late December that caused him to miss three games, followed by suffering a lower-body injury shortly after his return. Luongo is expected to miss a week or two of action, making it a close call for him to return to form for a strong start in Sochi. Price is already a six-year NHL veteran but will be playing in his first Olympics. The Montreal Canadiens star keeper has been showing his best abilities for Team Canadas management this past month, going 7-3-2 since the start of December. Smith secured his spot on the roster by posting a goals against average of 2.89 and a .911 save percentage for the Coyotes this season. Sochi would not be the Kingston, Ontario natives first IIHF rodeo. The Phoenix Coyote represented Canada in the 2012 World Championship but similar to Price he is a first-time Olympian. When a man bumped into Hernandez while dancing, spilling his drink, that may have been the last straw. Authorities say the former New England Patriots star followed the man and his friends, then opened fire on their car, killing two men and wounding a third. "I think I got one in the head and one in the chest," Hernandez said to a friend as they raced from the intersection where the victims were shot while they sat in their car at a stop light, prosecutors said at the former tight ends arraignment. Hernandez, already charged with killing another man last year, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to seven charges -- including two counts of first-degree murder -- in the 2012 shooting that killed Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado. The night de Abreu and Furtado were killed, Suffolk County First Assistant District Attorney Patrick Haggan said Hernandez and a friend drove from Connecticut to a Boston nightclub called Cure. They were standing at the edge of the dance floor when de Abreu accidentally bumped into Hernandez, smiled at him and did not apologize, according to prosecutors. Haggan said de Abreu and his friends did not appear to recognize Hernandez and had no idea he was upset. Hernandez became increasingly agitated and told his friend that de Abreu had deliberately bumped into him and "was trying him," Haggan said. Hernandez and his friend then went to another nightclub, where Hernandez thought he saw de Abreu and his friends come in, according to Haggan. Hernandez then told his friend he believed he was "being targeted and being disrespected," Haggan said. In fact, de Abreu and his friends had not left the other club. Haggan said Hernandez later drove around with his frieend until he saw de Abreu, Furtado and others going to their car, then followed them and pulled up alongside their car at a red light.dddddddddddd Hernandez leaned out the drivers side, said "Yo, whats up now," followed by a racial slur, then fired at least five shots into the car, killing de Abreu and Furtado, and injuring a man sitting in the back seat, Haggan said. Hernandezs attorney, Charles Rankin, objected to the description, saying the prosecutors account of the shooting was an attempt to poison the jury pool. Clerk Magistrate Gary Wilson dismissed the objection, saying it is standard procedure for prosecutors to describe evidence during arraignments in murder cases. Family members of the victims filled four rows in the courtroom. One woman sobbed loudly as Hernandez entered his not guilty pleas. De Abreu and Furtado were close friends who attended school and served in the military together in Cape Verde before coming to the United States, according to the attorney who represents their families in a $6 million civil suit against Hernandez. The two men were shot about six weeks before Hernandez signed a five-year, $40 million contract with the Patriots. He went on to catch 51 passes and score five touchdowns that season, his last in the NFL. Hernandez was released by the Patriots last summer after he was charged in the June 17 killing of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd, who was dating a sister of Hernandezs fiancee. Lloyds body was found in an industrial area near Hernandezs home in North Attleborough. Hernandezs lawyers have said he is looking forward to proving his innocence. Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley would not comment when reporters asked if Lloyds killing was linked to the earlier killings of de Abreu and Furtado. He said Lloyd was not the friend who was with Hernandez the night the two men were killed. Hernandez will continue to be held without bail. He is due back in court June 24. ' ' '

I miss football. It has been eleven years, eight months, and 261 days since I played my last CFL game. Never once in that time have I regretted my decision to retire, nor have I ever wished that I could make a comeback. I dont miss playing football. Three weeks into the 2014 CFL season, I miss the existence of football...or at least the version of the game that Ive spent virtually my entire life watching, playing, and loving. Absent is the fast pace of the game created by the 20-second play clock. In its place are plodding affairs that often exceed three hours in length and are punctuated by penalty flags and instant replay reviews. The superstar players who had drawn me to the sport growing up have been reduced to sharing the spotlight with the men in striped shirts. The captivating chess match between coaches, which used to be about Xs and Os, has instead become about which general is able parlay his complement of replay challenges into the biggest payoff. Perhaps most disturbing to me is the apparent desire to transform football from a "collision sport" into a "contact sport." Im not going to lie, nor am I going to apologize. I crave a certain amount of "controlled violence." I enjoy mixed martial arts, dont mind fighting in hockey, and to be blunt, absolutely love big hits on the gridiron. Those hits, and the inherent physical risk associated with them, are part of football...but, in Week 3, the CFL edged perilously close to dressing quarterbacks in red "non-contact" jerseys like the ones they wear in practice. I appreciate that the relatively new concept of player safety is being taken seriously, however, the fine line between "player safety in football" and "rugby played in helmets and shoulder pads" has become a little too blurry for my liking. My complaint isnt with the leagues officials. My beef is with the rules theyre being asked to enforce, the standards to which theyre being asked to enforce them, and a review system that effectively castrates them in terms of exercising judgment. Where the officials used to be asked to enforce the rules, they have now become slaves to those regulations. For me, football has always been about the human element – played by humans, coached by humans, officiated by humans, with opportunities for human excellence and human error creating an awesome 60-minute emotional journey. Rules have always been a necessary part of the game but now they too often overshadow the game. Every physical interaction between players is at risk of being deemed "too physical". The cerebral duel between coaches that takes place over 200 painstakingly conceived plays is becoming irrelevant next to the question of "Should he throw his challenge flag?" Every raw emotional reaction to an officials call loses its edge while the play is reviewed. Its just not the same. Dont get me wrong. The games in Week 3 of the CFL schedule still possessed many of the elements of Canadian football that Ive always enjoyed. Thanks to the drama of Julian Feoli-Gudinos game-winning catch, Adarius Bowmans one-handed touchdown grab, Jock Sanders 121-yard missed field goal return, and Andrew Harris run for the ages, the game being governed by current CFL rules still offers incredibly entertaining moments...but, man, I sure miss football. Melbourne, Australia (SportsNetwork.com) - Serena Williams is again the Australian Open champion. The top-seeded American earned her sixth Aussie Open title and 19th career Grand Slam championship with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) triumph over Maria Sharapova on Saturday at Rod Laver Arena. Williams won in Melbourne for the first time since 2010, finishing the match with an ace in the second-set tiebreaker on her third championship point. She now owns the second-most womens Grand Slam titles in the Open Era, surpassing legends Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova. Only Steffi Graf has more with 22. Standing here with 19 majors is something I never thought would happen, said Williams during the trophy ceremony. Sharapova was trying for a second Australian Open title. She fell to 2-17 lifetime against Williams and has lost the last 16 meetings. I havent beaten her in a really long time, but I love playing her because you want to play the best, said Sharapova. And shes the best. The 33-year-old Williams notched her 65th career title and has captured the last two Grand Slam events, taking the U.S. Open crown last September. Williams had a break point opportunity in the opening game of the match when Sharapova fired a backhand wide. A double fault quickly gave Williams the early advantage. The players were locked at 30-30 in the sixth game when rain forced the closing of the roof. Williams, who was bothered by a cold and a cough, hardly seemed affected by the wait, following an ace with a strong forehand winner to complete the hold for a 4-2 lead. She actually threw up during the delay. I guess theres a first time for anything, said Williams about vomiting. I think in a way that just helped me -- I felt better after that. My chest was really stuck at that point. A double fault gave Williams three break points in the next game, but she only needed one as Sharapova fired a backhand long. Sharapova broke back, but Williams responded to the poor service game with a break at love to take the first set. Williams continued her strong play into the second set with a hold at love, then had two more break points in the next game. Sharapova, though, regrouped and managed to save both before holding. Each player had a break chance midway through the second set, but Williams failed to convert her opportunity with a wide backhand in the sixth game and Sharapova sent a forehand wide in the seventh game. Another Sharapova forehand error gave Williams her first championship point in the 10th game, but the Russian came up with a big serve that Williams barely returned. Sharapova followed with a blistering forehand that drew applause from the American. The match definitely got tough in the second set, said Williams. Maria started playing a lot better. She started being a little more aggressive. I think I got a little more passive. Was just trying to get the ball back in play. But I also started serving better in the second set because I knew if I wasnt having my groundstrokes where I wanted them to be, I knew I could serve it out. After Williams held with an ace, Sharapova held at love to force the tiebreak. Sharapova won the first point of the tiebreak with a forehand return winner, but Williams won the next four to take control. At 6-4, Sharapova came up with a forehand that Williams could not return to save a second championship point. Williams then blasted what appeared to be an ace to win the title, but it was ruled a let. She dropped her racket in disbelief, then followed with the same serve. This one did not tip the tape and she dropped her racket again, but in exultation. I thought after the let, Man, I am not meant to win this tournament. I had a couple of match points. She played great on those match points, said Williams, who excitedly jumped around the court after winning. Sharapova fell to 5-5 all-time in Grand Slam finals, including 1-3 against Williams. The only victory came in the 2004 Wimbledon title match. Williams also beat Sharapova for the 2007 Australian Open crown and for the 2013 French Open title. Its always tough getting to a final stage of an event where its down to two players and you end up the one thats going home with the smaller trophy, theres no doubt about it, Sharapova lamented. No matter how you played, well or not, whatever the score line is, its always tough. But it will be all right. The 27-year-old Sharapovas lone Australian Open championship came in 2008 against Ana Ivanovic. She also lost the 2012 final against Victoria Azarenka. Wes Hopkins Youth Jersey . -- Jaye Marie Green shot a course-record 10-under 62 on Wednesday to take the first-round lead in the LPGA Tours qualifying tournament. As 2014 winds to a close, TSN.ca looks back at the stories and moments that made the year memorable. TSN.cas writing staff reflects on the best soccer moments from the past 12 months including Steven Gerrards infamous slip, Germany drubbing Brazil, Landon Donovans goodbye and more! Steven Gerrard lets Liverpool slip By Mike Beauvais This does not [expletive] slip now. Listen. Listen. This is gone. We go to Norwich. Exactly the same. We go again. Come on! - Steven Gerrard following a 3-2 win over Manchester City on April 13. The turnaround at Anfield under manager Brendan Rodgers was remarkable in 2013-14. In only his second year, Rodgers took a team that hadn’t qualified for the Champions League in four seasons. There was truly a sense that this would finally be Liverpool’s year after nearly a quarter-century of heartbreak. The greatest test for Rodgers’ seeming team of destiny was a clash on April 27 against Chelsea at Anfield. It was here that the football gods, like they have so many times before, revealed their cruel sense of humour. Into first-half stoppage, Mamadou Sakho attempted to find Gerrard, who mishandled the pass, allowing Chelsea striker Demba Ba to pounce upon the ball. With Ba having a clear path to goal, Gerrard slipped attempting to get back, allowing Ba to go in alone and fire Chelsea ahead 1-0. Chelsea would add another, easing to a 2-0 victory, stopping Liverpool’s winning streak and effectively killing the Reds’ title push. The following week, Liverpool would blow a 3-0 lead, settling for a 3-3 draw with Crystal Palace, a clear sign that their sense of a fated triumph had been replaced by a creeping dread. On May 11 - with word of City’s 2-0 title-clinching win over West Ham filtering into Anfield just after the Reds’ 2-1 victory against Newcastle - Liverpool stood on the pitch as runners-up, condemned to second-best by a literal slip-up by the very man who warned against it. -- Tim Howard just won’t stop By Shane McNeil Tim Howard earned a name for himself as the Americans’ savior during the 2014 World Cup with an almost-unfathomable 16 saves in the team’s quarter-final loss to Belgium. Howard broke a tournament record over his two hours on the pitch in the game that ultimately eliminated the Americans. The performance earned the 35-year-old Everton man the adulation of a nation and even a shout-out from President Barack Obama in a post-game phone call. Missed the game? Here’s a handy recap. But here’s the funny thing about that game … of all the saves Howard made, his best of the tournament was not among them. That status belongs to what should have been a back-of-the-net blunder against Portugal. Howard gets a hand to Nani’s shot from distannce, but in-doing so fails to put the ball out of play, or even out of harm.dddddddddddd Instead, it goes off the woodwork and on to the boot of Eder. The follow-up shot is actually mishit, which forces Howard past the trajectory of the ball, but Howard reaches out a palm as he’s fading away and parries the ball over the bar. Even Howard recognizes afterwards that that ball should’ve gone in. -- Germany Drops a Touchdown on Brazil By Mitchell Machtinger Brazil was tabbed by many as the team to beat in the tournament on their home soil. It seemed almost inevitable that the host nation would claim its sixth title in front of all its fans, but first they had to win their semifinal against Germany. Low-scoring matches in soccer are to be expected, especially when high quality opponents faceoff. However, 11 minutes in, Germany scored its first goal. They scored again at the 23rd minute. Then again a minute later, and two more in the next five minutes. This semifinal, which was supposed to feature two of the best teams in the world, was over before the first half whistle was blown. Germany’s five-goal explosion had deflated the entire stadium and an entire country. The Germans looked dominant, winning 7-1, while Brazil looked like they had no business being in a semifinal at all. Just how easily Germany handled Brazil was a complete shock to soccer experts and casual fans alike. The story of this game was Brazil’s loss. But it’s important not to overlook just how good this German team was. They did go on to win the World Cup, after all. -- Landon Donovan Goes Out on Top By Ken Rodney He didn’t score either goal - those were provided by Gyasi Zardes and Robbie Keane - but as he was many times for club and country, the most important person on the field for the MLS Cup Champion Los Angeles Galaxy was retiring captain Landon Donovan. After announcing earlier in the season that he would be calling it quits, the Ontario, California native was in the spotlight for Major League Soccer and he did not disappoint. Earlier in the season, before the retirement announcement, Donovan scored twice against the Philadelphia Union to become the MLS’ all-time leading scorer, a record that now sits at 144 goals. He was also famously left off the U.S. national soccer team that competed at the Word Cup in Brazil, after helping them advance to the quarter-finals in 2002 and the round of 16 in 2010. Still, none of that seemed to matter as he stood in the field of the StubHub Center with his arms raised in the air triumphantly after capturing his league record sixth MLS Cup. The MLS’ most celebrated, most decorated player and its marquee player, going out on top. ' ' '

The Revolution entered Saturdays second leg in decent shape, having taken the first leg at Red Bull Arena, 2-1 a week ago. But the momentum from the opening leg was quickly erased as the Red Bulls drew first blood. Thierry Henry, playing on an artificial surface for the first time in his MLS career, sent and excellent ball over the top to Tim Cahill in the 26th minute and the Australian international did well to outmuscle Revs defender Jose Goncalves and poke it past goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth. But New England pulled it level on the day at 1-1 and a 3-2 aggregate lead in the 41st minute when the home side elected to play a short corner kick to Chris Tierney and his cross was knocked off Davies and in behind RRed Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles.dddddddddddd New York battled back to make it 3-3 on aggregate in the 52nd minute when Lloyd Sam sent a speculative ball into the box that fell kindly to the feet of Peguy Luyindula and the Frenchman fired it home to make it 3-3. With the match at 3-3 on aggregate, the tie would have gone to extra time if the result held, but Davies came to the rescue with 20 minutes to play. The goal came to cap a spell of relentless offensive pressure from New England as Tierney again got free on the left wing and served a great ball into the box where Davies was there to nod it home and give the hosts a 4-3 aggregate lead. As the clock crept toward 90 minutes New York surged forward knowing another goal would send them through via the away goals tiebreaker, but the Revs back line held firm to secure the clubs first trip to the MLS title game for the first time since 2007. On little sleep after travelling back from Quebec in the morning and under soggy conditions, Winnipeg Goldeyes pitcher Chris Salamida made sure the Goldeyes started a seven-game homestand with a win. Salamida went eight innings to lead the Goldeyes (25-14) to a 4-1 victory over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (23-18) in front of 5,023 rain-soaked fans at Shaw Park Friday night. Thanks to the St. Paul Saints losing to the Sioux Falls Canaries, Winnipeg now has a three-game lead on the RedHawks and Saints in the American Associations North Division. After giving up the games first run in the top of the fourth inning off an infield single, Salamida retired the next 13 consecutive RedHawks and his teammates did the rest. "When you have a defence like that, its pretty easy to pitch," Salamida said. "You cant ask for a better situation." The Goldeyes quickly took the lead in the bottom of the fourth, as Reggie Abercrombie singled in Ray Sadler and Donnie Webb scored thanks to a balk by Fargos starting pitcher Drew Bowlin. Winnipeg added a run in the seventh when Casey Haerther singled in Ryan Pineda and another in the eighth when Luis Alen dropped a single into right field to score Abercrombie. "We came off a pretty good road trip and everybody is swinging the bat pretty well right now," Abercrombie said. Haerther led Winnipeg with three hits in the game to improve his league-leading batting average to .376. Salamida, who allowed just one run in eight innings of work and struck out seven, improved his record to 3-3 with the win. "I hated facing him when I was in Sioux Falls and I have even more praise being on his team than when I played against him," Abercrombie said of Salamida. "When hes on, its pretty hard to hit him." Bowlin suffered his first loss of the year for Fargo, while Chris Kissock pitched the ninth inning for his seventh save of the season. The second game of the four-game series between the Goldeyes and RedHawks goes Saturday night at Shaw Park. Lefty Nick Hernandez (3-0, 3.51) will take the ball for Winnipeg against Fargos Taylor Stanton (1-4, 3.72). The game was delayed 34 minutes by rain. He even addressed his group of relievers Sunday morning. Dustin McGowan made those worries a nonfactor, at least for a day. McGowan pitched three-hit ball for seven innings, Colby Rasmus hit a grand slam and Melky Cabrera added a two-run homer as the Blue Jays beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-2. "We had to have that one," Gibbons said. McGowan (2-1) allowed one run, striking out five and throwing 101 pitches. It was the second consecutive quality start for McGowan, a diabetic who started wearing an insulin pump on the mound in his last start. "My blood sugar still gets erratic sometimes," he said. "But thats part of the game for me. With the adrenaline going and everything, it does what it wants to do. I cant control it sometimes." McGowan eclipsed the 100-pitch mark for the first time since June 27, 2008. "Thats two outings wearing that pump," Gibbons said. "Maybe theres something to that." It was just the fourth win in 13 games for Toronto, which prevented the Pirates from completing their first series sweep of the season. Pirates manager Clint Hurdle and first base coach Rick Sofield were ejected by plate umpire Greg Gibson at the end of the fourth inning for arguing a called third strike on Jordy Mercer. The strikeout stranded two runners and ended the inning. "I think it was pretty apparent that the low strike wasnt going to come into play," Hurdle said. "But the fact of the matter was it got to a point where I felt a pitch that hadnt been called a strike all day got called a strike in, for me, a very pivotal at-bat for us." Rasmus connected in the second inning for his fourth career slam. He also doubled and singled. The Blue Jays held on to this early lead. Toronto wasted a 5-3, ninth-inning edge in the series opener and a 5-0, fourth-inning advantage on Saturday night. Josh Harrison hit two triples for the Pirates. Edinson&nnbsp;Volquez (1-3) gave up six runs and seven hits in five innings.dddddddddddd. He also allowed six earned runs in his last outing April 21 against St. Louis. Volquez pitched himself into a jam in the second inning before Rasmus stepped to the plate, issuing walks to Edwin Encarnacion and Juan Francisco to start the inning. Brett Lawrie reached on an infield single to load the bases with no outs. Rasmus hit a full-count curveball about 10 rows deep in the right-field seats for his seventh home run of the season, giving the Blue Jays a 4-1 lead. Rasmus said he was not necessarily looking for an offspeed pitch in that situation. "I was just trying to be out over the plate and throw my hands at anything because hes got a good changeup, good curveball and a good two-seamer, and he already tried to thumb me a couple in," he said. "I was just trying to be ready to put something in play." The slam negated an early lead the Pirates built on Neil Walkers groundout, scoring Harrison after his triple. Harrison also tripled in the eighth and scored on Andrew McCutchens sacrifice fly. Torontos Jose Bautista walked in the fifth to reach base in his 31st consecutive game, the longest active streak in the majors. But he went hitless, snapping a career-best 13-game hitting streak. Cabrera had three hits, and extended Torontos lead to 6-1 with a two-run homer off Volquez in the fifth. Rasmus scored another run in the eighth on an RBI single by pinch-hitter Dioner Navarro. HOUSTON -- Matt Dominguez hit an RBI single off the right-field wall in the ninth inning and the Houston Astros beat the Texas Rangers 5-4 Wednesday night to win a series against their in-state rivals for the first time since 2008. The Astros took two of three after losing 15 straight series to the Rangers. Houston overcame a four-run deficit to win. Dexter Fowler singled with one out in the ninth, Jason Castro drew a walk and Dominguez hit a long fly ball off Nick Martinez (0-1). Chad Qualls (1-1) got the last two outs in the ninth for the win. Alex Rios hit a solo homer, Adrian Beltre had three hits and Prince Fielder drove in two runs for Texas. The Astros trailed 4-0 before scoring two runs in the sixth. Rookie George Springer tied it with a two-run homer in the seventh. Jose Altuve singled to start the seventh before Springer launched his third career home run -- and first at home -- into the back of the seats in the Crawford Boxes in left field to make it 4-all. A pair of walks and a single by Dominguez loaded the bases for Houston with one out in the sixth inning. Pinch-hitter Jesus Guzman cut the lead to 4-1 with an RBI single to shallow centre and Chris Carter drove another run home with his single that dropped just inside the left-field line. Rios gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead in the second. Fielder hit the third of three straight singles to send a run home and make it 2-0 in the third. Top-seeded Djokovic swept to a 6-1, 6-3 win over 51st-ranked Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain in just 57 minutes, but fourth-seeded Federer had to see off a serious challenge from 48th-ranked Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic before coming through 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-3. "I have done really well today from the first to the last point," Djokovic said. "There was no major ups and downs, especially with the serve that helped me to win comfortably my service games, a lot of free points." In the first set, Djokovic raced to a 5-0 lead before Bautista Agut held serve to win his only game in the set. The only hiccup Djokovic had in the second set was when serving for the match at 5-2. He dropped his serve in that game but broke serve in the next to close out the match. Djokovic will play sixth-seeded Mikhail Youzhny, who beat British wildcard recipient James Ward 6-1, 7-6 (3). Federer came into his two hour, eight minute match with a 12-2 winning record over Stepanek. Hes now won their last nine meetings dating back to the 2008 Rome quarterfinals. "I got broken four times which is difficult, but its good to win those type of matches," said Federer, who faced eight break points against his serve. "Im happy to get through. "It didnt look good there for a while, but I got it done." Federer handled the first set with confidence, but started to falter as Stepanek became more aggressive in the second set. Federer managed to rebound from 4-2 down in the second set to force a tiebreaker -- where Stepanekk raced into a 6-2 and a first set point when Federer double faulted.ddddddddddddStepanek won the set on his third set point when Federer netted a forehand. Stepanek also took an early 2-0 lead in the third set, but Federer rebounded to go ahead 5-2 to serve for the match. Federers serve was broken when he double faulted in the eighth game. Stepanek, however, surrendered his serve in the next game to allow Federer to move into the quarterfinals. Hell now face another Czech player in Lukas Rosol, who upset eighth-seeded Dmitry Tursunov of Russia 6-4, 7-6 (4). "Today was quite frustrating," Federer said. "I had momentum on my side at the beginning, but it was tough to keep it going. "After the first set I was under pressure the entire match." Like Djokovic, third-seeded Tomas Berdych had an easy path to the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine. Berdych, who will face fifth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarterfinals, has won his last eight matches. Despite Berdych having trouble with his first serve -- his percentage was a ghastly 37 per cent -- he controlled the match. He lost his serve once, and won 12 of the last 14 points. "I was working a little more on my return stats than on my service stats," Berdych said. "The main focus really for the next days is to get my percentage of the first serve back and really find a nice and sweet rhythm for my serve." Tsonga won his second-round match by walkover when his opponent, Nikolay Davydenko, withdrew with a rib injury. Seventh-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Andrea Seppi of Italy. Kohlschreiber will play Tunisian wild card Malek Jaziri, who beat Somdev Devvarman of India 6-3, 7-5. ' ' '

ST. LOUIS -- Michael Morse rewarded his manager for giving him a rare day off. Morse homered and drove in three runs and Pablo Sandoval homered and scored twice to propel the San Francisco Giants to a 6-5 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday night in the opener of a four-game series. "It looked like the day off served him well," said manager Bruce Bochy, who sat Morse for the first time this season Wednesday against the Chicago Cubs. "A home run and that big hit off of one of the more dominant closers in the game with the power arm that he has." The Giants, at the start of a seven-game trip to St. Louis and Cincinnati, have won seven of eight. The Cardinals have dropped three of four to start their nine-game home stand. Gregor Blanco scored from second on Angel Pagans single to centre to tie the score at 4-all in the eighth. Third base coach Tim Flannery initially held Blanco at third because of centre fielder Peter Bourjos strong arm. But Blanco scored when the throw bounced on the home plate side of the mound and past three Cardinals, including Carlos Martinez (0-3), who was in front of catcher Yadier Molina rather than backing up the throw. Pagan moved up to second on the throw. Trevor Rosenthal came in after Martinez intentionally walked Sandoval, but Morse doubled just past a diving Bourjos to drive in Pagan and Sandoval and give the Giants a 6-4 lead. "I knew he was going to come with something hard," Morse said. "I just tried to be short. I just tried to touch something." Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said Martinez stopped when he saw Blanco stayed at third. He stabbed at the throw from Bourjos, keeping Molina from making the catch and allowing the ball to go to the screen. "Yaddy never was able to see the ball," Matheny said. "As soon as that balls hit, they all know, theyve got to get behind the catcher. He was in the wrong spot and it ended up hurting." Javier Lopez (1-0) got two groundouts in relief of Ryan Vogelsong for his first win since Sept. 22, 2013, at the New York Yankees. Sergio Romo gave up a run on Matt Carpenters two-out single, but held on for his 17th save in 19 chances. Romo has surrendered four runs in the past three games and had his ERA rise to 3.52. Morse, in his first season with the Giants, has nine hits in his past 16 at-bats, with five doubles, a triple and the home run. Hes driven in eight during that five-game span and has a team-high 37 RBIs for the year. "Were just playing," he said. "The mentality we have and the fun were having, I think winning is contagious and we love to win. Were just going to keep going at it." Vogelsong allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out five in 6 1-3 innings. Sandovals eighth homer of the season tied the score at 3-3 in the sixth inning. The third baseman has an RBI in each of the past nine games. Hes the first Giant to do that since Barry Bonds in 2000. Cardinals starter Jaime Garcia went seven innings, giving up three runs on five hits. He struck out seven and has yet to issue a walk this season. He was in line for the victory after Allen Craig hit his sixth homer of the season and second in three games off Vogelsong in the bottom of the sixth. "We definitely had a bead on that game," Craig said. "It felt like we were going to win it, but thats baseball. We didnt make enough plays." Vogelsong got into trouble in the fourth when the Cardinals loaded the bases with none out on Matt Hollidays single and consecutive walks to Craig and Molina. Jhonny Peralta, batting .111 (5 of 45) with runners in scoring position, grounded into a double play, plating Holliday. John Jay drove in Craig with a single to give St. Louis a 3-2 lead. Morse tied the score at 1-1 with his ninth homer of the season, a 442-foot blast to left centre to lead off the second. Brandon Hicks scored on Blancos single to give the Giants a 2-1 lead. St. Louis snapped Vogelsongs scoreless streak at 13 2-3 innings with a run in the first. Craigs ground-rule double brought home Carpenter, who singled to lead off and stole second with two outs. NOTES: Carpenters first-inning single extended his NL-best hitting streak to 11 games. ... The Giants improved to 9-14 when their opponents score first. ... Holliday has reached base safely in all 25 home games. . San Francisco C Buster Posey didnt play because of an ongoing back issue. Bochy said he is day to day. ... St. Louis 1B Matt Adams sat for the second consecutive night with a stiff left calf, though he was available as a pinch hitter. . The Cardinals entered the game without a home run off Vogelsong in 68 at-bats, and all but three of their 24 hits were for singles. The Giants had just one homer off Garcia in 66 at-bats, but seven of their 19 hits went for extra bases. . Cardinals prospect Tim Cooney had a no-hitter broken up with two outs in ninth Thursday for Triple-A Memphis. He settled for one-hitter. . St. Louis is set to start Adam Wainwright (8-2, 1.67) against San Franciscos Madison Bumgarner (6-3, 3.15) on Friday night. Zach Randolph Grizzlies Jersey . MONTREAL -- Sarah Koltuns Yukon rink may be paving the way for a new generation of northern curlers. The team representing the Territories lost twice at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts on Monday -- both by a score of 9-3 after eight ends -- to Team Canadas Rachel Homan in the afternoon and Quebecs Allison Ross in the evening. But theres promise in the Yukons (1-4) play. Theyre the youngest team at this years Scotties. Skip Sarah Koltun, lead Andrea Sinclair and second Patty Wallingham are all 20 years old, while third Chelsea Duncan is 21. The young women from Whitehorse have put their studies on hold for the year in order to stay in the Yukon and train for the season. "Its just something we decided was worth it in order to become more successful," said Koltun. "In the sport in general, teams are becoming more successful at a young age." They raise money year-round and receive funding from the Yukon government to offset the cost of travel expenses to tournaments. After skipping seven consecutive years at the Canadian junior championship, Koltun is now the youngest skip ever to play in this, her first Scotties. "Its been really good so far," she said. "And to have the crowd on our side is really cool. Weve been enjoying it a lot. The teams here are a lot stronger." In their evening match, Quebec Ross (1-4) broke a deadlock in the seventh end, putting up a four-spot with her last stone. "It wasnt my first instinct," Ross said of the tough shot that ultimately gave her the victory. "I was just going to draw for two. And my lead (Pamela Nugent) said, Is the double there? We went and looked. We figured it was, and that we might as well try it out." Quebec stole another two in the eighth to record their first victory of the Scotties to the delight of the hometown fans. "We made some shots that made it worth the crowd cheering for us," said Ross. "It feels really good -- finally. We played as well as we played in the other games, but it actually went our way this time. Nice change." The evening draw saw tight finishes across all other sheets. Newfoundlands Heather Strong (4-1) and P.E.I.s Kim Dolan (2-3) took a 4-4 tie into the 10th end, where Strong scored a deuce for the 6-4 victory. Nova Scotias Heather Smith (1-4) was involved in a seesaw battle with British Columbias Kesa Van Osch (2-3). Van Osch made her final rock count in the 10th end to win 9-8 after giving up the two-point leaad in the ninth.dddddddddddd Nova Scotia has given up leads in each of its four Scotties losses. "Weve had chances to win all four," said Smith. "An end or a shot, here or there, are the difference in our games so far. We just cant find a way to win. "In a week like this one, you just have to hope to get more wins than losses on those close ones." Albertas Val Sweeting (4-1) needed extra ends to beat New Brunswicks Andrea Crawford (2-3) by a score of 9-8 in the 11th. Sweeting put two points on the board in the eighth, and another two in the ninth, before Crawford tied the game with the hammer in the 10th. In afternoon matches Monday, Dolan edged Ontarios Allison Flaxey (1-3) by a count of 7-5. Flaxey scored one in the seventh end, and another in the eighth, but couldnt complete the comeback. Manitobas Chelsea Carey (3-1) scored four in the ninth against Nova Scotia, which conceded right after. The afternoon draw also saw a Saskatchewan team that could do no wrong, beating New Brunswick 9-3 after eight ends. Saskatchewan skip Stefanie Lawton (3-1) stole four in the third and another three in the fifth to seal the victory. "Theres always room for improvement," said Lawton, who called the four-point steal in the third end a game changer. "It definitely gave us an advantage and we were able to capitalize on that throughout the game. We played strong and put the pressure on." Homan scored three to take the lead over the Yukon in the third end, and never looked back. With the score 4-1 in the fourth, Koltun had a chance to reduce the deficit, but overthrew her final rock. "Unfortunately we didnt play our best, but we just need to learn from it," said Koltun. Still-unbeaten Canada (4-0) added another four in the seventh for an impressive victory. "Were playing well," said Homan. "We have to fine-tune a few things here and there. We got an early head start, and it was tough (for the Yukon) to catch up. "Were feeling good. We just need to keep rolling." Homan said she recognized a slightly younger version of herself in the Yukons skip, and suggested their styles of play were similar. Koltun couldnt agree more. "We try to play and train similarly, putting in the effort, the time, thats necessary to be successful," said Koltun, whos admired Homan since seeing her play at the 2007 Winter Canada Games in Whitehorse. "That hard work will eventually pay off." ' ' '

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Chargers have signed first-round draft pick Jason Verrett to a four-year contract. With Thursdays announcement, all six draft picks are under contract. Verrett, a cornerback from TCU, was taken with the 25th pick. Last year, he had 39 tackles, 14 pass deflections, two interceptions, one sack and one forced fumble. The Americans, skipped by John Shuster, seized the advantage in the eighth end by scoring five points for a 7-3 lead. The Czechs pulled two back in the ninth, but Shusters team of third Jeff Isaacson, second Jared Zezel and lead John Landsteiner ended with another point to secure the last Olympic berth on offer. Much of Mondays discussion focused on Bostons lineup considerations as the series progresses, specifically when the venue shifts to St. Yeezy Schweiz . The 18-year-old Januzaj has made his breakthrough at United this season, including scoring twice in a 2-1 win over Sunderland before the recent international break. His performances have sparked a debate about where his international future lies.OAKLAND, Calif. -- Jason Hammel walked off the mound in the sixth inning to a standing ovation from the announced crowd of 16,335 at the Coliseum. He saluted the fans with his right hand, looking more relieved than happy. Maybe for good reason. Hammel snapped a four-start losing streak since being traded to Oakland and led the Athletics past the Tampa Bay Rays 3-0 on Tuesday night. "Felt awesome," Hammel said. "I wanted to come in and make an immediate impact. It didnt work out that way. But it goes to show you how good of baseball fans we have here." Hammel (1-4) allowed seven hits and four walks in 5 2-3 innings. He entered the game with a 9.53 ERA since the As acquired him and Jeff Samardzija from the Chicago Cubs on July 4. The right-hander said he worked in more breaking balls to keep hitters guessing. "Its a lot harder to hit when youre thinking of four different pitches instead of two," he said. Coco Crisp, starting for the first time since July 26, singled home a run in the fifth, and Nate Freiman hit an RBI double during a two-run sixth to spoil Drew Smylys debut with Tampa Bay. Smyly (6-10) gave up all three runs, seven hits and two walks, including one intentional, in 5 1-3 innings. The left-hander was traded from Detroit last week in the three-team deal that sent ace David Price to the Tigers. "I fought pretty good," Smyly said. "My pitch count got up there. I had a couple of deep counts. I missed my pitch against Freiman. Other than that, I thought I pitched well." Tampa Bay has lost three straight and five of six after an 11-1 stretch. The Rays never could crack Hammel, who pitched for Tampa Bay from 2006-08, or any of the pitchers the major-league leading As threw their way. Three relievers tossed scoreless ball before Sean Doolittle pitched a perfect ninth for his 17th save in 20 tries to preserve Hammels win. "That might be just what he needed," Doolittle said, "to get on a roll.&" DEFENSIVE AS Hammel escaped trouble in the third and fourth innings by inducing a pair of ground balls that led to double plays.dddddddddddd As shortstop Eric Sogard also snagged Ben Zobrists hard grounder and made a quick throw to nab Desmond Jennings at third base for the first out of the fifth. Sogard started at shortstop instead of second base because Jed Lowrie was nursing a bruised right index finger. "He really looked like he was comfortable," As manager Bob Melvin said. RAYS ERRORS It was a far different story on defence for the Rays. Curt Casali was called for catchers interference on Josh Reddicks grounder leading off the As eighth. Third baseman Evan Longoria threw way wide on a relay home in the sixth for another error that helped Derek Norris score from first on Freimans double. And Kevin Kiermaier tried to cut down Alberto Callaspo at the plate on Crisps single in the fifth but sailed his throw to the backstop from right field. "I always encourage guys if theyre going to throw it away, to really throw it away. So he takes instruction well," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "Really, though, when youre not scoring, those things get magnified." TRAINERS ROOM Rays: Outfielder Wil Myers, on the 60-day disabled list with a broken right wrist, went through an extensive workout and drills for the second straight day in Port Charlotte, Florida. The Rays could decide by the end of the week when Myers will begin his rehab assignment. Athletics: Lowrie (bruised right index finger) is day to day. First baseman Kyle Blanks (left calf injury) ran the bases and will do so again on Thursday before Oakland decides whether to send him out on a rehab assignment. ON DECK Rays: Jeremy Hellickson (0-1, 3.29) tries to snap his six-start winless streak, which dates to Sept. 4, 2013. Athletics: Sonny Gray (12-4, 2.59) goes in the series finale after winning AL Pitcher of the Month for July. ' ' '

Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink was left to rue his sides missed chances as they were beaten 3-2 by Sunderland on Saturday. Diego Costa and Nemanja Matic scored in the first half to put the visitors 2-1 ahead at the Stadium of Light. But Costa was twice denied by Vito Mannone after the break and Sunderland fought back to claim a potentially crucial victory in their fight against relegation. It was an odd afternoon, Hiddink told Sky Sports. We started very well and got the lead, but later on we didnt add to our advantage and invited them into it.We reacted well to make it 2-1 and in the second half we could have scored to make it 3-1, but we didnt. We invited them into the game and they did very well.We didnt score again and they still had the opportunity. For them it was must-win and I cannot blame the attitude of the team, we were a bit sloppy at times, but we came here to win and we didnt do so. Pick your team Aguero? Ozil? De Bruyne? Chicago at Detroit (-7) One team is coming off of two wins of identical 21-13 scores over Minnesota and Tampa Bay, both at home. The other team is coming off two losses on the road (14-6 at Arizona and 34-9 at New England). Marc Trestman will have good video to study how to move the ball effectively on Detroit. Another big concern for Detroit is they have not registered a touchdown or a sack in the last two games. There are injury concerns at left tackle for the Lions and at cornerback for the Bears. Its a divisional game in the NFC North so the seven points is just too many points for me. Bears. Philadelphia at Dallas (-3) Dallas should be able to move the ball consistently against the Eagles. Philadelphia is 30th in pass defence, have allowed the third-most touchdown passes with 24 and most plays of 20-plus yards at 49. Still if Dallas can establish DeMarco Murray, they can win time of possession and keep the Eagles offence off the field. Dallas truly had a short week having to fly back from New York but if they stick to basics, and on a short week teams usually do, I do see a seven-point win. Dallas needs this bad as they are back in Philadelphia in two weeks and can put a stop on the three-year streak of 8-8 records. Cowboys. Seattle at San Francisco (-1) Did you know the team that scores the first touchdown in the Thursday night games this season is 12-0? Perhaps an advantage for the 49ers at home. Both teams need this one as they are still chasing the Cardinals. Both quarterbacks have exceptional mobility but I think Russell Wilson is more effective when things break down. What concerns me is the seven sacks allowed by Seattle up front and the absence of Marshawn Lynch last week. These two teams do play again in two weeks so the season is on the line for San Francisco to win at home. 49ers. Tennessee at Houston (-6.5) The Texans have already beaten the Titans 30-16 earlier this year so confidence being back at NRG stadium is high. Ryan Mallett is out for the year so it is back to where it started with Ryan Fitzpatrick. Houston is an excellent takeaway team with an NFL-best 24 and theyre going against a rookie quarterback in Zack Mettenberger. Great competition between Taylor Lewan at left tackle for Tennessee and Jadeveon Clowney at right end. With five games left and a 5-6 record, the Texans still have a shot at a 10-win season. Texans. Oakland at St. Louis (-7) It is hard not to like the Rams in a dominant win. The pressure is off for a week in Oakland. After 16 straight losses, a 24-20 win over divisional rival Kansas City means the Raiders will not be 0-16. It will be interesting to see what the Raiders do at running back. Maurice Jones-Drew was acquired in free agency, Darren McFadden is the experienced incumbent, Marcel Reece is part halfback, part fullback and Latavius Murray is the youngest but most explosive. Who receives playing time these last five weeks means a lot. The last two home wins by St. Louis over Seattle and Denver have been impressive and combined with an 0-5 road record for the Raiders the Rams should win and by more than seven. Rams cover. San Diego at Baltimore (-4.5) The strength of Baltimore is run defence and run offence. I thought they did an excellent job against the Saints - especially in the first half - of making Drew Brees one dimensional and on run offence the consistent good play of Justin Forsett in effectively replacing Ray Rice has been a great story. Forsett needs only 97 yards to be a 1,000 yard rusher and has five games to get it. The strength of the Chargers is Philip Rivers as a quarterback. He completed 14 of 15 passes in the second half for the win against the Rams. The Chargers have to win this one. After the Ravens they have New England and Denver at home, then are at San Francisco and home to KC to end the season. Even though they are coming off the win, I think the Chargers are fading while Baltimore is improving. Ravens cover. Cleveland at Buffalo (-1.5) The Cleveland Browns may be the biggest surprise of the NFL. And now they have Josh Gordon back better than ever. Gordon was targeted 16 times against Atlanta, catching eight for 120 yards. But the Bills responded amazingly well to all the adversity and in Ford Field dominated the Jets 38-3. Even if Joe Haden successfully takes Sammy Watkins out of the game 1-on-1 Robert Woods is an excellent alternative. Buffalo Bills move to 7-5 and beat the Browns. Bills. Cincinnati (-3.5) at Tampa Bay Since the disaster against the Browns in Week 10 at home the Bengals have bounced back to beat both the Saints in New Orleans and last week the Texans in Houston 22-13.dddddddddddd I do think given time Lovie Smith can produce a winner in Tampa Bay. Raheem Morris as a head coach was 17-42. Greg Schiano in his limited time was 4-12. And now Smith is 2-9. They play a Bengal team that has both Jeremy Hill and Giovani Bernard back. The ability of both players helps Andy Dalton as a quarterback in every way. AJ Green has been thrown to 24 times and caught 18 for 248 yards and a touchdown in the last two games. The third game on the road is a challenge but I like the Bengals. Bengals cover 3.5. Washington at Indianapolis (-9.5) These are two teams with completely different approaches to passing the football. Washington will take what a defence gives them, as indicated by having the leagues lowest distance of completion. The Colts are home run hitters and will take downfield shots consistently to break a game wide open. At home I look for Indianapolis to do just that in the second half and break the game wide open. Colts cover. NY Giants (-2) at Jacksonville Odell Beckham has opened up the offence for the Giants and with his presence it also means more room for running backs Rashad Jennings and Andre Williams. And you combine that fact with the truth that the Jacksonville Jaguars have only scored over 20 points twice this season I say yes, the Giants can win by at least 3. Giants. New Orleans at Pittsburgh (-3) At 4-7 the Saints have to win all of the last five games to hit a nine-win season and yes that might be enough to win the division. For the Steelers they are coming off the Thursday night three-point win at Tennessee but are at home with late November cold against a dome Saints team. No team in football through the last 10 games has allowed more first downs on 3rd and 8 or 4th and 8 or longer than New Orleans. Ill take the Steelers at Heinz Field. Carolina at Minnesota (-2) Tough time for Carolina to travel to Minnesota. One team may have a poor record at 4-7 but there does seem like a competitive plan is in place. The other team too has a poor record and seems to be in confusion and disarray. If Minnesota can hold Green Bay to 24 points they can do the same to Carolina. Cam Newton is on pace to be quarterback sacked 51 times which would surpass his career high of 43. Mike Zimmer knows potential rookie of the year Kelvin Benjamin is one of the players that can do him damage but will do all he can to make sure Newton does not have time to find him. Vikings. Atlanta at Arizona (-2.5) There are concerns at quarterback for an Arizona team that did not play well in Seattle but the question is can the starting defence take the Cardinals to an NFC West division title? They are going to have to compete with a motivated Atlanta Falcon team as any one of the four teams in the NFC South still have a chance to win the division. But Atlanta is the front runner and the reason is that out of the division they are 0-7, in the division they are 4-0. I say the pattern continues...Cardinals cover 3. New England at Green Bay (-3) This is a very possible Super Bowl preview and the first time ever Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers have played each other as starting quarterbacks. The New England Patriots have an absolutely astonishing record of 32-3 in the second half of the season since 2010. Can a Patriot defensive duo of Darrell Revis and Brandon Browner slow down the combination of wide receivers Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb? Can Green Bay on defence slow down a New England offence that has won their last four games by 22 or more points? Minnesota held Rodgers to 209 passing yards. That is the video to study. Patriots. Denver (-1) at Kansas City The concern for the Denver Broncos is that they trailed Miami last week three times at home by 11 points and at the start of the fourth quarter were down by a score of 28-17. The confidence with Denver is in that fourth quarter they exploded for three touchdowns in three offensive possessions to win 39-36. For the Chiefs, against Buffalo and Seattle they barely won and last week in Oakland were 2 for 14 on third down. Peyton Manning over Alex Smith. Broncos over Chiefs. Miami (-4.5) at NY Jets I know you should not go against the home underdog on Monday Night Football but the Jets have won two games and the Dolphins have won six but have been very competitive in the last three losses they have had. Miami easily could be 9-2. And in the six wins the average margin of victory is 19 points. I can see a 19-point win for Miami in New York. Ryan Tannehill was 5-for-5 in the red zone for the Dolphins, and just like the team he is improving. Dolphins. ' ' '
