The defence called Peet van Zyl to the stand in an attempt to bolster Pistorius account that he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder, providing testimony about a loving relationship and a fear of crime that may have pushed the Paralympian to fire through a closed toilet door. Van Zyl faced tough questioning from the chief prosecutor, however, about Pistorius alleged egotism and tantrums, high-speed driving and love of guns. The prosecution maintains that he intentionally killed Steenkamp in his home after an argument in the early hours of Feb. 14, 2013. Pistorius, who is free on bail, faces 25 years to life in prison if found guilty of premeditated murder, but he could also be sentenced to significant time behind bars if convicted of murder without premeditation or negligent killing. He also faces gun-related charges. MIAMI - Nathan Eovaldi pitched seven innings and the Miami Marlins scored nine runs off NL ERA leader Aaron Harang to beat the Atlanta Braves 9-3 Wednesday. Harang (3-2) gave up 10 hits in 4 2-3 innings, and his ERA rose from 0.85 to 2.97. The Marlins tied a season high with 15 hits, including seven for extra bases. Marcell Ozuna hit a three-run homer, and Christian Yelich added his first home run of the year. The homers were the first allowed by Harang this year. Following the announcement of the Team Canada roster for Sochi 2014 on Tuesday, speculation has begun about which of the three goaltending candidates should become the starter, Roberto Luongo, Carey Price, or Mike Smith. The two names that are being bounced around most are British Columbia native Price and Montreal native Luongo. Both have had very successful seasons to date, with each players goals-against average sitting around the 2.20 mark. They have similar save percentages as well, with Price besting Luongo by a small margin at .928. So if you were head coach Mike Babcock, who would be your starting goalie? Luongo is a veteran in international competition, having competed in both the 2006 Turin games and winning gold in his home country at the Vancouver 2010 games. He averaged 1.76 goals against in the 2010 games when he was the teams starting goaltender. The Vancouver Canuck is currently at a disadvantage due to injury. Hes had a slow start to 2014 after suffering a groin injury in late December that caused him to miss three games, followed by suffering a lower-body injury shortly after his return. Luongo is expected to miss a week or two of action, making it a close call for him to return to form for a strong start in Sochi. Price is already a six-year NHL veteran but will be playing in his first Olympics. When a man bumped into Hernandez while dancing, spilling his drink, that may have been the last straw. Authorities say the former New England Patriots star followed the man and his friends, then opened fire on their car, killing two men and wounding a third. "I think I got one in the head and one in the chest," Hernandez said to a friend as they raced from the intersection where the victims were shot while they sat in their car at a stop light, prosecutors said at the former tight ends arraignment. Hernandez, already charged with killing another man last year, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to seven charges -- including two counts of first-degree murder -- in the 2012 shooting that killed Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado. The night de Abreu and Furtado were killed, Suffolk County First Assistant District Attorney Patrick Haggan said Hernandez and a friend drove from Connecticut to a Boston nightclub called Cure. They were standing at the edge of the dance floor when de Abreu accidentally bumped into Hernandez, smiled at him and did not apologize, according to prosecutors. Haggan said de Abreu and his friends did not appear to recognize Hernandez and had no idea he was upset. Hernandez became increasingly agitated and told his friend that de Abreu had deliberately bumped into him and "was trying him," Haggan said. Hernandez and his friend then went to another nightclub, where Hernandez thought he saw de Abreu and his friends come in, according to Haggan. Hernandez then told his friend he believed he was "being targeted and being disrespected," Haggan said. In fact, de Abreu and his friends had not left the other club. Haggan said Hernandez later drove around with his frieend until he saw de Abreu, Furtado and others going to their car, then followed them and pulled up alongside their car at a red light.dddddddddddd Hernandez leaned out the drivers side, said "Yo, whats up now," followed by a racial slur, then fired at least five shots into the car, killing de Abreu and Furtado, and injuring a man sitting in the back seat, Haggan said. De Abreu and Furtado were close friends who attended school and served in the military together in Cape Verde before coming to the United States, according to the attorney who represents their families in a $6 million civil suit against Hernandez. The two men were shot about six weeks before Hernandez signed a five-year, $40 million contract with the Patriots. He went on to catch 51 passes and score five touchdowns that season, his last in the NFL. Hernandez was released by the Patriots last summer after he was charged in the June 17 killing of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd, who was dating a sister of Hernandezs fiancee. Lloyds body was found in an industrial area near Hernandezs home in North Attleborough. Hernandezs lawyers have said he is looking forward to proving his innocence. I miss football. It has been eleven years, eight months, and 261 days since I played my last CFL game. Never once in that time have I regretted my decision to retire, nor have I ever wished that I could make a comeback. I dont miss playing football. Three weeks into the 2014 CFL season, I miss the existence of football...or at least the version of the game that Ive spent virtually my entire life watching, playing, and loving. Absent is the fast pace of the game created by the 20-second play clock. In its place are plodding affairs that often exceed three hours in length and are punctuated by penalty flags and instant replay reviews. The superstar players who had drawn me to the sport growing up have been reduced to sharing the spotlight with the men in striped shirts. The captivating chess match between coaches, which used to be about Xs and Os, has instead become about which general is able parlay his complement of replay challenges into the biggest payoff. Perhaps most disturbing to me is the apparent desire to transform football from a "collision sport" into a "contact sport." Im not going to lie, nor am I going to apologize. I crave a certain amount of "controlled violence." I enjoy mixed martial arts, dont mind fighting in hockey, and to be blunt, absolutely love big hits on the gridiron. Those hits, and the inherent physical risk associated with them, are part of football...but, in Week 3, the CFL edged perilously close to dressing quarterbacks in red "non-contact" jerseys like the ones they wear in practice. I appreciate that the relatively new concept of player safety is being taken seriously, however, the fine line between "player safety in football" and "rugby played in helmets and shoulder pads" has become a little too blurry for my liking. My complaint isnt with the leagues officials. My beef is with the rules theyre being asked to enforce, the standards to which theyre being asked to enforce them, and a review system that effectively castrates them in terms of exercising judgment. Where the officials used to be asked to enforce the rules, they have now become slaves to those regulations. For me, football has always been about the human element – played by humans, coached by humans, officiated by humans, with opportunities for human excellence and human error creating an awesome 60-minute emotional journey. Rules have always been a necessary part of the game but now they too often overshadow the game. Every physical interaction between players is at risk of being deemed "too physical". The cerebral duel between coaches that takes place over 200 painstakingly conceived plays is becoming irrelevant next to the question of "Should he throw his challenge flag?" Every raw emotional reaction to an officials call loses its edge while the play is reviewed. Its just not the same. Dont get me wrong. The games in Week 3 of the CFL schedule still possessed many of the elements of Canadian football that Ive always enjoyed. Low-scoring matches in soccer are to be expected, especially when high quality opponents faceoff. However, 11 minutes in, Germany scored its first goal. They scored again at the 23rd minute. Then again a minute later, and two more in the next five minutes. This semifinal, which was supposed to feature two of the best teams in the world, was over before the first half whistle was blown. Germany’s five-goal explosion had deflated the entire stadium and an entire country. The Germans looked dominant, winning 7-1, while Brazil looked like they had no business being in a semifinal at all. Just how easily Germany handled Brazil was a complete shock to soccer experts and casual fans alike. The story of this game was Brazil’s loss. But it’s important not to overlook just how good this German team was. Starks, whose return was first reported by media outlets late Monday, returns to back up Offensive Rookie of the Year Eddie Lacy. General manager Ted Thompson announced the move Wednesday. ST. LOUIS -- Michael Morse rewarded his manager for giving him a rare day off. Morse homered and drove in three runs and Pablo Sandoval homered and scored twice to propel the San Francisco Giants to a 6-5 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday night in the opener of a four-game series. "It looked like the day off served him well," said manager Bruce Bochy, who sat Morse for the first time this season Wednesday against the Chicago Cubs. "A home run and that big hit off of one of the more dominant closers in the game with the power arm that he has." The Giants, at the start of a seven-game trip to St. Louis and Cincinnati, have won seven of eight. The Cardinals have dropped three of four to start their nine-game home stand. Gregor Blanco scored from second on Angel Pagans single to centre to tie the score at 4-all in the eighth. Third base coach Tim Flannery initially held Blanco at third because of centre fielder Peter Bourjos strong arm. But Blanco scored when the throw bounced on the home plate side of the mound and past three Cardinals, including Carlos Martinez (0-3), who was in front of catcher Yadier Molina rather than backing up the throw. Pagan moved up to second on the throw. Trevor Rosenthal came in after Martinez intentionally walked Sandoval, but Morse doubled just past a diving Bourjos to drive in Pagan and Sandoval and give the Giants a 6-4 lead. The team representing the Territories lost twice at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts on Monday -- both by a score of 9-3 after eight ends -- to Team Canadas Rachel Homan in the afternoon and Quebecs Allison Ross in the evening. But theres promise in the Yukons (1-4) play. Theyre the youngest team at this years Scotties. Skip Sarah Koltun, lead Andrea Sinclair and second Patty Wallingham are all 20 years old, while third Chelsea Duncan is 21. The young women from Whitehorse have put their studies on hold for the year in order to stay in the Yukon and train for the season. "Its just something we decided was worth it in order to become more successful," said Koltun. "In the sport in general, teams are becoming more successful at a young age." They raise money year-round and receive funding from the Yukon government to offset the cost of travel expenses to tournaments. After skipping seven consecutive years at the Canadian junior championship, Koltun is now the youngest skip ever to play in this, her first Scotties. "Its been really good so far," she said. "And to have the crowd on our side is really cool. Weve been enjoying it a lot. The teams here are a lot stronger." In their evening match, Quebec Ross (1-4) broke a deadlock in the seventh end, putting up a four-spot with her last stone. Still if Dallas can establish DeMarco Murray, they can win time of possession and keep the Eagles offence off the field. Dallas truly had a short week having to fly back from New York but if they stick to basics, and on a short week teams usually do, I do see a seven-point win. Dallas needs this bad as they are back in Philadelphia in two weeks and can put a stop on the three-year streak of 8-8 records. Cowboys. Seattle at San Francisco (-1) Did you know the team that scores the first touchdown in the Thursday night games this season is 12-0? Perhaps an advantage for the 49ers at home. Both teams need this one as they are still chasing the Cardinals. Both quarterbacks have exceptional mobility but I think Russell Wilson is more effective when things break down. What concerns me is the seven sacks allowed by Seattle up front and the absence of Marshawn Lynch last week. These two teams do play again in two weeks so the season is on the line for San Francisco to win at home. 49ers. Tennessee at Houston (-6.5) The Texans have already beaten the Titans 30-16 earlier this year so confidence being back at NRG stadium is high. Ryan Mallett is out for the year so it is back to where it started with Ryan Fitzpatrick. Houston is an excellent takeaway team with an NFL-best 24 and theyre going against a rookie quarterback in Zack Mettenberger. Oakland at St. Louis (-7) It is hard not to like the Rams in a dominant win. The pressure is off for a week in Oakland. After 16 straight losses, a 24-20 win over divisional rival Kansas City means the Raiders will not be 0-16. It will be interesting to see what the Raiders do at running back. Maurice Jones-Drew was acquired in free agency, Darren McFadden is the experienced incumbent, Marcel Reece is part halfback, part fullback and Latavius Murray is the youngest but most explosive. Who receives playing time these last five weeks means a lot. The last two home wins by St. Louis over Seattle and Denver have been impressive and combined with an 0-5 road record for the Raiders the Rams should win and by more than seven. Rams cover. San Diego at Baltimore (-4.5) The strength of Baltimore is run defence and run offence. I thought they did an excellent job against the Saints - especially in the first half - of making Drew Brees one dimensional and on run offence the consistent good play of Justin Forsett in effectively replacing Ray Rice has been a great story. Forsett needs only 97 yards to be a 1,000 yard rusher and has five games to get it. The strength of the Chargers is Philip Rivers as a quarterback. He completed 14 of 15 passes in the second half for the win against the Rams. The Chargers have to win this one. After the Ravens they have New England and Denver at home, then are at San Francisco and home to KC to end the season. Even though they are coming off the win, I think the Chargers are fading while Baltimore is improving. Ravens cover. Cleveland at Buffalo (-1.5) The Cleveland Browns may be the biggest surprise of the NFL. And now they have Josh Gordon back better than ever. Gordon was targeted 16 times against Atlanta, catching eight for 120 yards. But the Bills responded amazingly well to all the adversity and in Ford Field dominated the Jets 38-3. Cincinnati (-3.5) at Tampa Bay Since the disaster against the Browns in Week 10 at home the Bengals have bounced back to beat both the Saints in New Orleans and last week the Texans in Houston 22-13.dddddddddddd I do think given time Lovie Smith can produce a winner in Tampa Bay. Raheem Morris as a head coach was 17-42. Greg Schiano in his limited time was 4-12. And now Smith is 2-9. They play a Bengal team that has both Jeremy Hill and Giovani Bernard back. The ability of both players helps Andy Dalton as a quarterback in every way. AJ Green has been thrown to 24 times and caught 18 for 248 yards and a touchdown in the last two games. The third game on the road is a challenge but I like the Bengals. Bengals cover 3.5. Washington at Indianapolis (-9.5) These are two teams with completely different approaches to passing the football. Washington will take what a defence gives them, as indicated by having the leagues lowest distance of completion. The Colts are home run hitters and will take downfield shots consistently to break a game wide open. At home I look for Indianapolis to do just that in the second half and break the game wide open. Colts cover. NY Giants (-2) at Jacksonville Odell Beckham has opened up the offence for the Giants and with his presence it also means more room for running backs Rashad Jennings and Andre Williams. And you combine that fact with the truth that the Jacksonville Jaguars have only scored over 20 points twice this season I say yes, the Giants can win by at least 3. Giants. New Orleans at Pittsburgh (-3) At 4-7 the Saints have to win all of the last five games to hit a nine-win season and yes that might be enough to win the division. For the Steelers they are coming off the Thursday night three-point win at Tennessee but are at home with late November cold against a dome Saints team. No team in football through the last 10 games has allowed more first downs on 3rd and 8 or 4th and 8 or longer than New Orleans. Ill take the Steelers at Heinz Field. Carolina at Minnesota (-2) Tough time for Carolina to travel to Minnesota. One team may have a poor record at 4-7 but there does seem like a competitive plan is in place. The other team too has a poor record and seems to be in confusion and disarray. If Minnesota can hold Green Bay to 24 points they can do the same to Carolina. Cam Newton is on pace to be quarterback sacked 51 times which would surpass his career high of 43. Mike Zimmer knows potential rookie of the year Kelvin Benjamin is one of the players that can do him damage but will do all he can to make sure Newton does not have time to find him. Vikings. Atlanta at Arizona (-2.5) There are concerns at quarterback for an Arizona team that did not play well in Seattle but the question is can the starting defence take the Cardinals to an NFC West division title? They are going to have to compete with a motivated Atlanta Falcon team as any one of the four teams in the NFC South still have a chance to win the division. But Atlanta is the front runner and the reason is that out of the division they are 0-7, in the division they are 4-0. I say the pattern continues...Cardinals cover 3. New England at Green Bay (-3) This is a very possible Super Bowl preview and the first time ever Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers have played each other as starting quarterbacks. The New England Patriots have an absolutely astonishing record of 32-3 in the second half of the season since 2010. Can a Patriot defensive duo of Darrell Revis and Brandon Browner slow down the combination of wide receivers Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb? Can Green Bay on defence slow down a New England offence that has won their last four games by 22 or more points? Minnesota held Rodgers to 209 passing yards. That is the video to study. Patriots. Denver (-1) at Kansas City The concern for the Denver Broncos is that they trailed Miami last week three times at home by 11 points and at the start of the fourth quarter were down by a score of 28-17. The confidence with Denver is in that fourth quarter they exploded for three touchdowns in three offensive possessions to win 39-36. For the Chiefs, against Buffalo and Seattle they barely won and last week in Oakland were 2 for 14 on third down. Peyton Manning over Alex Smith. Broncos over Chiefs. Miami (-4.5) at NY Jets I know you should not go against the home underdog on Monday Night Football but the Jets have won two games and the Dolphins have won six but have been very competitive in the last three losses they have had. Miami easily could be 9-2. And in the six wins the average margin of victory is 19 points. I can see a 19-point win for Miami in New York.
